Maps for Learning: The Roads to Profitability Map
This process map illustrates all the typical categories of revenue, expenses, and profit, highlighting the fact that there are lots of expenses that come out of revenue before profit is determined. Our research has shown that most people believe that out of $100 of revenue, a company keeps approximately 50-80% as profit. This finding results from the lack of opportunity people in organizations have had to learn about where the money comes from, where it goes to, and then how much is left over. This map for learning provides spaces for you to include your own revenue, expense, and profit numbers, all based on a scale of 100. This approach to teaching the basics of profitability has been successfully used with thousands of employees in a variety of companies.
Map for Learning: The Difference Between Profit and Cash Map
This process map illustrates the flow of cash, the need for cash throughout the business process, and the fact that cash is very different from the concept called profit. We have found that employees, managers and leaders (yes, everyone in the organization) are a bit murky about this difference, and that a visual showing how cold hard cash flows out days, weeks, and even months before it flows back in is an eye-opening lesson. Every organization can benefit if their employees, managers, and leaders understand that cash is king for a business to remain healthy and to grow. The concept of cash vs. profit is one of the biggest ah ha’s we’ve seen in the classes we teach.
