During the week of July 6th I did a class for one my oldest friends and BLI partners MacDermid. The first company I ever trained. I have not worked with them for 7 years. It great to renew our old relationship bring some exciting and dynamic finance training to this group, now a part of Platform Specialties Products Corp (PAH). I did the full week training class we have done in the past. This class is one of the most intense and collaborative trainings we do.
I trained with a partner at PAH Michael Siegmund, an Executive Vice President. It was great to catch up with Michael and his team. The class went great. It is not a class for the faint of heart. The students spend the days in class and then spend the nights on case studies. Sometimes late into the night. It’s a busy week and intense class but it’s also an effective one because the attendees really learn the content in this format. The students learn during the day, prepare their case at night, and present in the morning applying what they learned.
MacDermid always has an international group with many different points of view. I find the classes more interesting when people from Asia, the Americas and Europe come together. In any culture and language finance is still the same. The class focuses on owner earnings, or as Warren Buffett calls it, free cash flow. MacDermid teaches its leaders to think like Warren and that means cash flow. The case study takes the students through 10 years of modeling applying different strategies from acquisitions to cost cutting. Through the course the students really learn to see how different strategies affect the financials and the prospects of the business.
On Wednesday afternoon we took a break for a water balloon fight. The class was in Florida so a little water was pretty welcome. The MacDermid team made ‘it’s a beautiful day for finance’ t-shirts for the activity. A shirt I will now wear often because everyone knows that every day is a beautiful day for finance.
