We renewed our on-going training program with Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). We do a two day session for this bank located in Santa Clara California – the heart of Silicon Valley. The two day program is unique for us. Bank financials are very different than typical business financials. There is a lot of focus on capital ratios and interest spread. The banking industry really has its own financial language and it is very different from traditional finance.
SVB is a unique bank in that it has billions of dollars of really low cost deposits. This is due to the fact that it has many customers based in the Silicon Valley network like Google and Yahoo. These successful technology companies like to keep cash on hand and so Silicon Valley bank is the beneficiary of very large low cost deposits. This makes it possible for the bank to make nice margins on its loans. It also makes the bank very safe from a regulatory standpoint. We had two great days in the Santa Clara sunshine.
One thing I really like about SVB is their cafeteria. The first day I had a grilled chicken pomegranate vinaigrette salad. The second day it was a cheese steak Panini. The best corporate café food I’ve had with the Electronic Arts cafeteria taking a close second. The bank is in the shadow of the new San Francisco 49ers Stadium. I hope future trainings are close to a game. It was truly two great days for finance but I think they were good football days too.
